Happy birthday to you! But cake with your coworkers can only get you so far. You deserve some free birthday stuff for making it through another year.
As we get older, birthdays can feel less important. That’s partly because of spoilsports who believe that you shouldn’t really celebrate once you become an adult.
Not having a gigantic birthday party is understandable, but there’s no reason not to take advantage of birthday freebies for adults.
Read on to find free birthday gifts for yourself.
Just about every chain restaurant offers some sort of free food to you to commemorate the day of your birth. It doesn’t matter if you’re craving fried chicken, pizza, or breakfast food; there’s something out there for every appetite.
Don’t think you can wake up on your birthday and simple stroll into the nearest diner for a free meal, though. In many cases, restaurants want some of your data in exchange for that birthday freebie.
That may mean you have to add your name to an e-mail list. In other cases, you’ll have to sign up for a rewards membership.
For instance, it’s common for restaurants like Red Robin and The Olive Garden to offer you a free appetizer, entree or dessert on your birthday, but it’s wise to sign up at least a couple of weeks before.
Why a couple weeks? That gives the system time to catch up and process your membership information. In some cases, you may be able to talk to a server and get them to input the reward manually, but that’s more trouble for everyone.
Plan Your Treats Carefully
How much time do you have to redeem those birthday rewards? That depends on where you go.
Some places give you a full month to redeem your birthday freebie. Other places will give you a week.
A few places, however, will only give you a day. For instance, the Starbucks birthday reward is only redeemable on your birthday, and the company’s website says you must also be a Starbucks Rewards member for at least a week before your birthday.
Once you’re a member, though, you only have to make one purchase in the 12 months prior to your birthday. If you can meet that low bar, you’ll get a message two days before your birthday telling you that a treat awaits.
Other Free Birthday Stuff
If you’re like most people, you only eat three meals a day, even on your birthday. So you’ll want to cash in some other free rewards as well.
Planning to do some online shopping? Look for promo codes that you can use, either on your birthday or any of the other 364 days of the year.
Feel like some birthday pampering? Makeup and cosmetics stores like Sephora and Ulta will give you a free reward for being part of their member loyalty programs.
