WordPress Bloggers: Say Goodbye to GFC

WordPress Bloggers: Say Goodbye to GFC

google-dont-be-evilIf you’re a WordPress blogger, you may be shocked to find out that as of March 1, 2012, you’re no longer important enough to Google to keep your GFC (Google Friend Connect). The Official Google Blog posted today stating:

“Friend Connect allows webmasters to add social features to their sites by embedding a few snippets of code. We’re retiring the service for all non-Blogger sites on March 1, 2012. We encourage affected sites to create a Google+ page and place a Google+ badge on their site so they can bring their community of followers to Google+ and use new features like Circles and Hangouts to keep in touch.”

This is bad news for WordPress bloggers. Google+ pages are not blogger friendly. In case you forget to update your Google+ page, there are no ways to auto-post your blog posts. Also, no WordPress plugins exist for Google+ pages yet. We’re left with another horrible social networking service that is against bloggers.

Facebook isn’t any better. Their new “Insights” page is a joke. Freebie Spot Facebook posts are being shown to around 10% of my fans. How’s that for an insight?

Good luck creating your Google+ page; they certainly don’t make it easy. My page is created. I have 1 connection

Well, don’t truly understand all this but I’m on gc and my web is not up and running but maybe I’m in for more trouble than I orginally thought.. Hope I can figure this out if you’ve been blogging this long and having trouble, I’m in deep poo !

i have been reading and commenting on blogs for over a year now and i’m thinking of starting one myself on wordpress.

Crap… I’m not on Blogger and WP. I’m more alienated than you guys! I’m on a open source platform called Blogengine.net and I do have GFC widget on my sidebar but there are times when GFC is down and all I can see is a blank spot. I really don’t want to go for Google+, I have enough to keep track with!!!

thats a bummer. I happen to stumble upon a page yesterday when i was looking for info on figuring out how to make your pages like your above on blogger because the way it is i have them up top,but if i go to do anything with them it only changes what the page says. Anyways

Hi Ada. Thanks for your comments!

You mentioned one of the reasons I dislike Blogger/Google the most. To me, Google is stealing from their bloggers. Just because they offer a free service doesn’t mean they need to take all the advertising revenue. Bloggers are people who need to earn a living too! That reason alone would cause me to never use Blogger.

I also cannot believe that Google didn’t update their toolbar for Firefox. You are probably right; Google wants people to use Google products only and seems to be moving away from providing their products and services as add-ons for other products. And shame on them for that! How selfish are they?

Grr! I hate this! I can’t believe they are doing that. I guess I’m going to have to figure out something else to do. I don’t want to use Google+ so I’m not sure where to go now. I mean it sucks because I’ve finally built my followers up now. 🙁

I feel the same way! What a waste of promoting GFC on all of my giveaways.

I don’t like Google+ at all. 🙁 They will never be Facebook, no matter how hard they try.
